On 1 January, 2024, the beginning of the year, when families and relatives gathered to spend time together, a huge earthquake suddenly struck Noto peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture. Even now, nearly after two and a half months, water supply is cut off in many areas, and it is painful to hear about people living in difficulty in evacuation situations.

At the same time, thanks to many emergency relief organizations and experts who have been working in different fields to support people's lives in various places since the next day of the earthquake. Let us pray to our merciful God for the continued blessings and protection on this current situation, both physical and mental health and safety of each and every one of victims, supporters and volunteers.

The “Caritas Noto Support Center” (commonly known as Noto-Sen) was established, on 22 January, at Kanazawa Catholic Church. We are happy and thank God for the opportunity to help out in the center as stuff, since we Holy Spirit Sisters have the community here in Kanazawa.

Father Kataoka from the Ishikawa area has been appointed as the person in charge of Caritas Noto Support Center, and members of the Emergency Response Support Team (ERST) of the Catholic Central Council and the staff from Caritas Minamisanriku and Minamisoma are working from outside the prefecture. They take turns in setting up the center and base, making preparations, and handling administrative tasks. They are conducting field surveys, exchanging information, negotiating, and collaborating with local organizations and NPOs on a daily basis to ensure that the center can operate better in the future and to be able to organize volunteer groups.
