Sensitivities of Children are just amazing...

2019-10-02
I have religious classes with 5- and 6-years old children in our Kindergarten.
In September, I asked the children to draw about creation, after they had listened to Creation Story, without a picture book.
I was watching with great impression, the extended fun atmosphere of the children while drawing the bright world using different colors.
At the following class, I asked the children as review,
“How did God make the sky, flowers and animals?” And then I got shock of my life when immediately a boy cried out, “By the work of the Word!”
I almost got false impression that I was in a Sunday School, but it was a kindergarten class I was in and the child was supposed to be a non-believer.
I could not really understand how that child knew this difficult term “the work of the Word”. However, when I looked at the lyrics of a song on the white board, I got it, “Yes, that’s it!”.
We had been sisnging a song titled “Why is that sky blue?”, composed by Mr. Koichi Tanaka.         The Lyric is as follows.
    "Why is that sky blue?
    Why is that cloud white?
    How can that bird fly?
    Why did that flower bloom?
That is the work of God's Word
Everything in the world was made by God.”
That boy was able to connect the lyrics of this song with the Story of Creation.
From this incident, I noticed that there are lots of songs that adults sing casually without thinking the meaning, but children with clear hearts focuse on the lyrics when they sing and compare with what they have learned.
If this is what happens, it is important to consider what kind of songs should we introduce to children.
And I wonder, when we live with such children, how much influence we adults have given them with our attitude, facial expression, and what and how we speak… Are we giving positive impacts to them or not...? This is the reflection, I made.
